Eighth Month Progress Video

I figured it was time to submit another embarrassing video to YouTube. It's been over half a year since my last video. Gives me a chance to see how my playing looks. Here's an attempt at the Bach Bouree. I know it's supposed to be more staccato. There are quite a few bad notes. I skipped the trill, started over at one point, well you get the drift. I figured if I wait till I get it note perfekt, you guys won't be seeing any videos for a long, long time. I was mostly trying to not rush. The jury is not out yet on how to hold the bow. I have had conflicting reports.

Nice video. I still don't have the nerve to put up my efforts.

Who needs the trills with the birdies' accompaniment? Do they always sing along?

Loved the birdies in a row. You're making good progress with the bow hand, and the longer notes where you added a little vibrato sounded quite nice in the video. One thing that I would add to make it more musical is a little more breathing room between the phrases - it's a common fault that I share, and often not noticed until you record yourself.

Comment from teacher friend:

On the first hearing I’d say that you’ve come a long way in terms of technique and confidence.

There’s got to be a way of jumping into positions on the cello where your shifts are calculated, your batting average (ratio of successful shifts) will improve dramatically. I’d like to see more oomph in your bowing...more strength and flexibility in the right hand, fingers, and wrist for better (clearer) articulation. Even on phrases that end on weaker fingers, don’t swallow notes...make EVERY note ring...in other words, each note start and end nicely...don’t end a phrase on a “duh” as in places where the phrase ended on a short note on the 4th finger. Notes should be rounder. Does that make sense?...Notes should ring even after you’ve finished them. Vibrato will help.

And, now, that you have more confidence and technique, I’d like to start hearing you make these pieces “yours”....within the limits of good period practice there is room for your own passion to come through so that you can leave something of a personal mark on them.

Again, these suggestions should not seem to minimize the the incredible progress you’ve made in a short time. - CP

@Guanaco - Yes, the birdies sing along all the time. Sometimes they are so noisy that I have trouble concentrating.

@GGP - RC is very anti-vibrato. Yet sometimes I can't help myself :)
Sometimes I forget to breathe altogether and actually choke while practicing.

I like the birdies too. :-) It is very helpful to record yourself, but does take courage. I admire you for posting (I haven't posted audio yet either, though I have found GGP's Breval very helpful in my own work on that piece--Thanks GGP) and am looking forward to hearing The Swan.

You are making great progress!
